In 1963, during Jamaat-e-Islami’s Lahore congregation, firing broke out while Ameer-e-Jamaat Maulana Syed Abul A‘la Maududi was addressing the gathering. JI worker Allah Bakhsh was martyred when he tried to confront the gunmen. As people urged Maulana Maududi to sit down and take cover, he responded with words that became part of Jamaat’s political memory: "If I sit down, who will remain standing?” Decades later, that question still carries weight. As the movement against the petroleum levy now moves towards its Islamabad phase on 20 September, the test again is one of discipline, peaceful resistance, and remaining firm on a public demand even when pressure increases. The government must explain what is preventing a fair, transparent, and independent investigation. Who is so powerful that the inquiry appears to have lost public confidence? No society can survive when justice is delayed or denied. The announcement of a judicial commission has only deepened public concerns. If past commissions, including the one related to the Gul Plaza tragedy, failed to deliver meaningful accountability, people have every right to ask whether this is another attempt to delay the investigation instead of allowing the truth to emerge.
